The 3,371-seat State Theatre opened in February 1929 and was designed by Henry White in conjunction with John Eberson.
The auditorium was designed in the Atmospheric theatre style with an Italian garden theme, very similar to Eberson’s Riviera Theatre, now called the Rose Blumkin Performing Arts Center, in Omaha Nebraska.
The theatre was renamed as the Forum Theatre in 1962, converted into two separate cinemas in 1963, then after the closure of both cinemas was used for religious services for several years.
Since 1995 the venue has operated as live music and events venue Forum Melbourne, more commonly known simply as The Forum.
