KPCC In Person presents AirTalk’s FilmWeek 2020 Oscar Preview.

Join us as KPCC In Person convenes host Larry Mantle and the FilmWeek critics for its 18th annual Oscar preview event at the historic Theatre at Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles—just one week ahead of the 92nd Academy Awards. Among the buzzier titles considered in the running for best picture are Todd Phillips’s “Joker” with Joaquin Phoenix, who many believe will earn a best actor nomination for his role as the smiley Batman villain; Lulu Wang’s summer hit “The Farewell” starring Awkwafina; and Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”. Also receiving plenty of critical attention is Noah Baumbach’s film “Marriage Story”, for which Adam Driver and Scarlett Johannsson are favorites to earn nominations for their leading roles. And, of course, what would the best picture category be without some newcomers like South Korean director Bong Joon-Ho, whose film “Parasite” is a favorite to win several nominations, including a possible best director nomination for Bong.

Built in 1927 by Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin, and D.W. Griffith, the Theatre at Ace Hotel was originally known as the United Artists Theatre. At the groundbreaking ceremony, Fairbanks said he hoped the theatre would always be a reminder that Los Angeles is the center of production of the film industry. More than 90 years later, on the very same stage, Larry and the critics will discuss and debate this year’s contenders for the major Oscar categories.
