Frederic J. Klein

Born: 1874 (Detroit, Michigan)

Died: 1957 (Peoria, Illinois)

Architect Frederic Klein was born in 1874 in Detroit, Michigan, and moved to Peoria as a child with his parents. A self-taught architect, he learned the profession in the offices of local architects Richardson & Salter, Reeves & Baillie and Herbert Hewitt.

Klein started his own architectural office in 1903 to coincide with the publication of his book, The House Book, featuring 100 designs and plans for homes. He practiced in Peoria from 1903 until his death in 1957 and designed buildings throughout central Illinois.

Some of Klein’s most notable buildings in Peoria include Peoria High School, Franklin School, the Packard Plaza building, and the pavilions at Grand View and Trewyn parks.
