John P. MacLaren

Born: 1865 (Wakefield, Quebec)

Died: 1951 (Ottawa, Ontario)

Architect John Pritchard MacLaren was part of a wealthy family active in lumbering, paper-making, hydro-generation, and real estate. He produced a steady stream of capably handled but not ground-breaking buildings in a variety of styles. In a career of forty years he designed numerous churches, several banks, some interesting houses, two library branches, a movie theatre, a private school for girls, auto garages, showrooms, and a warehouse.

Born in 1865 to Alexander MacLaren and Ann Pritchard in Wakefield, Quebec, he practiced briefly in Brantford, Ontario before moving to Buckingham, Quebec, the location of MacLaren-owned paper mill where he lived for a few years before taking up permanent residence in Ottawa in December 1898, opening a practice under his own name.

Retiring in 1945, J.P. MacLaren passed away on May 10, 1951.
