The MTV Movie & TV Awards were known as the MTV Movie Awards until 2017. Nominees are chosen by producers and executives at MTV, with winners decided online by the general public.
In the 1990s the awards show was televised from Sony, Disney, or Warner Bros studios, or the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California.
In the 2000s, studios were used when the show was not broadcast from the Shrine Auditorium, although in 2007 the show went to the Universal Amphitheatre (Universal City, California) and stayed there until 2012.
After 2012 studios were back in use with the Nokia Theatre (later called the Microsoft Theater, and as of Summer 2023 the Peacock Theater) in Downtown Los Angeles providing the venue in 2014 and 2015.
The awards show has been back at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, since 2018, aside from a gap year during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, and coming from the Hollywood Palladium in 2021.
