The MTV Movie & TV Awards were known as the MTV Movie Awards until 2017. Nominees are chosen by producers and executives at MTV, with winners decided online by the general public.
In the 1990s the awards show was televised from Sony or Warner Bros studios, or the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, CA. In the 2000s, studios were used when the show was not broadcast from the Shrine Auditorium, although in 2007 the show went to the Universal Amphitheatre (Universal City, CA) and stayed there until 2012. After 2012 studios were back in use with the Nokia Theatre (now Microsoft Theater) in downtown Los Angeles providing the venue in 2014 and 2015. The awards show has been back at the Barker Hangar since 2018.
