Edward A. Stone Edward A. Stone

Born: 1880 (Rotherhithe, UK)

Edward Albert Stone was the Picture House Trust’s (PHT) chairman and principal architect.

The collaboration of Stone with colleague Thomas R. Somerford designed four London Astoria cinemas / movie theatres: Brixton (1929), Old Kent Road (1930), Finsbury Park (1930), and Streatham (1930).

The spectacular Astoria cinemas all built by PHT were made possible because of money from the U.S.-based Paramount Corporation, and from 1931 they became known as the Paramount Astorias. The Astorias were the most important group of early London Atmospheric cinemas. With their lavishly themed interior scenic effects, they ushered in a new era of British picture houses.
