The Primetime Emmy Award is presented by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS)  for excellence in American primetime television programming. First given out in 1949, “primetime” was added in 1974 to distinguish between the Daytime and Primetime Emmy Awards.
for excellence in American primetime television programming. First given out in 1949, “primetime” was added in 1974 to distinguish between the Daytime and Primetime Emmy Awards.
The inaugural ceremony took place at the Hollywood Athletic Club in 1949. In 1950 and 1951 the venue changed to the Ambassador Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. For the next ten years the awards would bounce around Cocoanut Grove in Hollywood (1952 & 1958), Hotel Statler (now the Wilshire Grand) in Los Angeles (1953), the Hollywood Palladium (1954), the Pan Pacific Auditorium (1956), and the NBC studios in Burbank, California (1957, 1959, and 1960).
The awards had a steady run at the Hollywood Palladium from 1962 through 1968, save for 1967 when they took place at the Century Plaza hotel. In 1969 the awards moved to the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, then back to the Century Plaza hotel for 1970. The Hollywood Palladium once again hosted in 1975, and the Shubert Theatre in New York played host to the awards in 1973, 1976, and 2001.
Since 2008, award ceremonies have been held at the Nokia Theatre (later called the Microsoft Theater, and as of Summer 2023 the Peacock Theater) in Downtown Los Angeles.
