The U.S. Northeast is home to some of the oldest theatres in the United States, including the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia – the oldest continuously operating theatre in the country. For the purposes of this website the area extends from Maine in the northeast to New Jersey and Pennsylvania in the south and west.

American Northeast (outside New York City)

Benedum Center, Pittsburgh

Originally opened in early 1927 as the 3,800-seat Stanley Theatre, the theatre was restored and renovated in the late 1980s and became the 2,800-seat Benedum Center.

Byham Theatre, Pittsburgh

The Byham Theatre opened in late Fall 1904 as a vaudeville house called the Gayety Theater. The theatre underwent a renovation in 1995 and the name was changed to the Byham Theatre in respect of a large financial gift by Carolyn & William Byham.

Heinz Hall, Pittsburgh

Heinz Hall opened as Loew’s and United Artists’ Penn Theatre in September 1927, designed by renowned theatre architects Rapp and Rapp. Undergoing a major renovation in the late 1960s, the theatre reopened as a symphony hall in 1971.

Palace Theatre, Greensburg

The Palace Theatre opened in early September 1926 as the Manos Theatre, the crown jewel of the Manos Theatre chain. The 2,100-seat theatre was home to vaudeville and movies and featured three murals in the auditorium by renowned Chicago-based artist Louis Grell.
