** CANCELED ** The Jerry Herman Awards

** THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED **

Each year, the Hollywood Pantages hosts the Jerry Herman High School Musical Theatre Awards with one goal: to constructively support local high school performing arts programs. Both public and private high schools from all over Los Angeles County submit productions for consideration across twelve performance and technical categories: Scenic Design, Lighting Design, Costume Design, Orchestra, Ensemble/Chorus, Musical Staging/Choreography, Musical Direction, Technical Crew, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, "No Small Parts", and Best Production.

The Hollywood Pantages sends volunteer adjudicators to all of the performances. In the spring, a team at the Pantages, determine the nominees using the adjudicators’ notes and a DVD of the production.

To compete for the best actor and best actress categories, each participating school sends one male and one female lead to audition in front of a panel of industry judges. For two days leading up the award show, the best actor and actress nominees are narrowed down to three male and three female finalists. The six finalists perform a solo number on the night of the awards, with a trip to New York to participate in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (The Jimmys) awarded to the final male and female contestants.

** THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED **

Regarded as one of the most successful figures in entertainment today, Chelsea Handler and her talk shows, best-selling books, and stand-up comedy have attracted millions of fans worldwide.

After a successful seven-year run as the host of E!’s top-rated “Chelsea Lately,” Handler launched an all-new talk show for Netflix in May 2016. “Chelsea” was the first of its kind for the global on-demand generation and tackled today’s tough issues with the same acerbic wit and fearless curiosity fans know and love. Handler traveled around the world – braving an ice-skating rink in Russia and wielding a Trump-shaped piñata through the streets of Mexico and back again to Los Angeles, where she taped in front of a live in-studio audience featuring celebrities, dignitaries, and surprise guests.

From intimate dinner parties to viral PSAs to “explainer segments” that answered all the questions you’re too embarrassed to ask, she brought you thought-provoking, yet hilarious conversations about topics like international cultures, alternative lifestyles, education, health, sports, parenting, politics, and more. The show’s 120 episodes continue to be available for streaming globally on the platform.

Willman: Magic For Humans In Person

Willman: Magic For Humans In Person

Justin Willman wants to melt your brain while making you laugh. He’s best known as the star and creator of the hit Netflix series Magic For Humans. But you may recognize him from one of his many television appearances (The Tonight Show, The Today Show, Ellen, Conan...). Or maybe you know his work as a host (Baking Impossible; Cupcake Wars; Win, Lose or Draw...). Or maybe he’s the child magician you hired in suburban St. Louis in the ‘90s. If you don’t know Justin, he’s a magician and comedian who’s mastered the art of turning cynics into believers (or at least getting them to laugh). His live show is simultaneously mind-blowing and hilarious, and will likely keep you up at night wondering how the heck any of it was possible.

Justin is also a proud father, a loving husband, and has zero experience as a licensed boat mechanic (that’s a different Justin Willman).

Los Angeles Ballet: Firebird & Serenade

11th May 2024, 2pm

Los Angeles Ballet: Firebird & Serenade

Firebird, the Russian Slavic folk tale passed down to children to this day, tells the story of a magical bird made of fire. Ivan, a young and boisterous prince, is granted the help of the bird to overthrow the evil magician Tzar named Kaschie and save the beautiful Princess.

Originally debuted in Paris at Palais Garnier by Imperial Russian choreographer Michel Fokine in 1910 with a score by Igor Stravinsky, the dance was considered groundbreaking and exceedingly radical compared to other ballets performed at the time. Yuri Possokhovs sensational production of Firebird is both visually and musically dazzling. Audiences of all ages will no doubt enjoy this most entertaining ballet fairytale.

Serenade is a milestone in the history of dance. It is the first original ballet Balanchine created in America and is one of the signature works of New York City Ballets repertory. The ballet is performed by 28 dancers in what are now signature blue costumes in front of a blue-hued background.

“The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari”

1st June 2024, 2pm

“The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari”

Last Remaining Seats (LRS), the Los Angeles Conservancy’s Link opens in new window flagship film series, is back on Broadway this June! This summer, three of downtown Los Angeles’s most stunning historic theatres will be on full display for attendees of the Last Remaining Seats: the Orpheum, Los Angeles, and Palace theatres.

In The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) Link opens in new window, a mysterious doctor uses hypnosis to transform a somnambulist (sleepwalker) into his nefarious evil companion … or does he? When a prophesied murder occurs, the town blames the creature and investigates the secretive doctor. But within the world of German Expressionism cinema, nothing is as it seems.

Told in flashbacks and full of fantastical sets and brooding characters, THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI will challenge your perceptions and leave you wondering what was real and what was imagined. As one of the original cinematic horror stories, CALIGARI establishes techniques, styles and themes that have influenced both horror and film noir genres. Widely regarded as the first horror film, THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI has entranced audiences with its unique visual style and extraordinary story for over 100 years. Prepare to be amazed!

Before the show, we’re pleased to present two frightfully fun silents to get you into a SpOoKy mood! PETE’S HAUNTED HOUSE (1926): Featuring the adorable silent cartoon star “Pete the Pup,” this delightful live-action/animated hybrid short is ahead of its time. THE HAUNTED HOUSE (1921): The legendary Buster Keaton stars in this clever comedy caper set inside a haunted house. (But is it actually haunted…?)

“The Seven Year Itch”

Last Remaining Seats (LRS), the Los Angeles Conservancy’s Link opens in new window flagship film series, is back on Broadway this June! This summer, three of downtown Los Angeles’s most stunning historic theatres will be on full display for attendees of the Last Remaining Seats: the Orpheum, Los Angeles, and Palace theatres.

Based on a popular Broadway play, The Seven Year Itch (1955) Link opens in new window, is the story of a seemingly happily married man who stays behind in Manhattan while is family is away for summer vacation. It’s a sweltering summer, and Richard Sherman (Tom Ewell, in the role he originated on Broadway) is alone in his apartment for the season. At the same time, a beautiful blonde bombshell (Marilyn Monroe, at the height of her popularity) has just moved into the upstairs apartment and unknowingly gives him a case of “the seven-year itch.”

THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH is perhaps most famous for its iconic scene of Marilyn Monroe letting her white halter dress billow over the Subway vent. Although censors tamed down this scene, and many of the other themes of the original stage play, the film was an enormous box office success. And while it enshrined Marilyn Monroe’s image into legend, THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH also showcases her talents as a smart and nuanced actor.

Celebrate Marilyn Monroe’s birthday with one of her most iconic films! She’s never been more “Marilyn” than in this hilarious romp from writer/director Billy Wilder.

Tickets go on sale for Conservancy members on 10th April. General public can purchase tickets beginning 17th April. Tickets are $20 for members and $25 for general public.

But when things go very wrong very quickly, McQueen is determined to get to the truth–regardless of where his investigation leads.

Numerous surprises and plot twists throughout this neo-noir thriller drive the story forward at all levels, well beyond the speed limit! It all culminates in one of the most iconic car chases in film history.

Based on the Broadway hit play, “Angel Street,” Gaslight (1944) Link opens in new window is a psychological, gothic-noir thriller that’s dripping in deception, self-doubt, hysteria, and abuse of power. It provides a cautionary tale of trusting and loving too much, too quickly, through the story of a whirlwind romance between a beautiful, aspiring singer named Paula (Ingrid Bergman in an Oscar-winning role) and her handsome but sinister husband Gregory (Charles Boyer in a shocking performance).

Soon after moving into her late aunt’s townhome, Bergman’s marriage to Boyer begins to fall apart. From misplaced items to ghostly footsteps to dimmed gaslights, Gregory blames a series of unexplained events on the sensitive Paula, convincing her that she’s losing her mind. But when she discovers he is not the man she thought he was, Paula fights back to prove her sanity and save her life.

Directed by the legendary George Cukor, GASLIGHT coined the term “gaslighting” and continues to drive conversation around mental health and emotional abuse.

“From Russia with Love”

15th June 2024, 2pm

“From Russia with Love”

Last Remaining Seats (LRS), the Los Angeles Conservancy’s Link opens in new window flagship film series, is back on Broadway this June! This summer, three of downtown Los Angeles’s most stunning historic theatres will be on full display for attendees of the Last Remaining Seats: the Orpheum, Los Angeles, and Palace theatres.

In From Russia with Love (1963) Link opens in new window, crime ring SPECTRE is seeking revenge on James Bond in this Cold War action adventure. The stakes are higher than ever as Bond (Sean Connery, at his best) is faced with merciless Russian hitmen and spies as he tries to protect a vital Russian coding device for MI6.

The beautiful Soviet Consulate clerk Tatiana (Danielle Bianchi) is pursued across Turkey, Venice, and along the Orient Express by a ruthless SPECTRE assassin, played by a chilling Robert Shaw.

FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE features all the hallmarks of a Bond film, with its helicopter chases, tech gadgets, and theme song. It also features the first on-screen appearances of Bond arch-nemesis Ernst Stavro Blofeld, Desmond Llewelyn as “Q,” and John Barry with his first of eleven BOND scores. Before Daniel Craig, FROM RUSSIA is about as gritty as a BOND movie gets.

“Mi Vida Loca”

“Mi Vida Loca”

Last Remaining Seats (LRS), the Los Angeles Conservancy’s Link opens in new window flagship film series, is back on Broadway this June! This summer, three of downtown Los Angeles’s most stunning historic theatres will be on full display for attendees of the Last Remaining Seats: the Orpheum, Los Angeles, and Palace theatres.

Set in Echo Park, Mi Vida Loca (1993) Link opens in new window consists of several anecdotes about Latina teenagers who are “homegirls,” or girlfriends to gang members. The first story is about “Sad Girl” and “Mousie” whose friendship is tested when they both become pregnant by “Ernesto.”

The brief second story is about Ernesto training the quasi-comic character “Whisper” to become a drug dealer. The third story is about “Giggles,” a symbol of female empowerment, who leaves prison after serving time for her now-deceased boyfriend and is now determined to leave the gang life behind for something better.

The last story is a tender love story about Sad Girl’s sister “La Blue Eyes” who falls for a man in prison.

Director Allison Anders’ film debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in 1993 and was released to acclaim in 1994, with critics applauding its realism. Anders worked with non-actors and Echo Park community members to create this realistic, difficult story about sisterhood and sacrifice, and it has since become a cult classic.

MI VIDA LOCA was nominated to the National Film Registry in 2023.
